NOTE: Pressure treated lumber is often "green" when purchased, requiring a period of time before painting or staining is possible.

Modern pressure treated wood is safe for use on surfaces which can come into contact with food. Prior to 2003, lumber companies often used a substance called chromated copper arsenate to treat wood. The arsenic made the wood harmful when coming into contact with food. Currently, lumber companies cure wood with safe treatements such as alkaline copper quarternary.
